- On a motorway, use the hard shoulder and turn your steering wheel towards the verge.
- If you are on a “Smart Motorway” with no hard shoulder, try to reach an Emergency Area (EA) marked with a blue sign and an orange SOS phone symbol.
2. Make Yourself Visible Visibility is your best defence, especially during night-time breakdowns in poorly lit areas of rural Essex.
- Turn on your hazard warning lights immediately.

3. Exit the Vehicle (The Passenger Side Rule) This is the most critical step. Never exit your vehicle via the driver’s door if you are parked on the side of a live lane. * Always exit through the passenger-side doors, away from the passing traffic.
- Move well away from the road. In Essex, this often means moving up an embankment or behind a crash barrier.
- Keep your passengers together and ensure children are closely supervised. Do not allow anyone to stand between the car and the recovery truck when it arrives.
